At the end of September 2026, C&N Group shipped a batch of high-yield weld neck flanges to a customer in Saudi Arabia. The order covered two sizes, a 10-inch flange to ASME B16.5 and a 42-inch flange to ASME B16.47 Series A, both in Class 300 and both forged from ASTM A859 Grade A Class 2 material.

Why A859 Grade A Class 2

ASTM A859 covers low-carbon, age-hardening alloy steel forgings for pressure vessel components. Grade A is a nickel-copper-chromium-molybdenum-columbium steel, and Class 2 is quenched and then precipitation hardened. That gives a minimum yield strength of 65 ksi (450 MPa) and a minimum tensile strength of 75 ksi (515 MPa), well above what a standard weld neck flange in A105 can offer.

Flanges in this grade are usually chosen when they have to be welded to high-strength line pipe, where the flange should not be the weak point of the joint. The low carbon content also helps on site, since the material stays weldable even at this strength level. Each forging is tension tested and Charpy impact tested, as the specification requires.

Two sizes, two standards

The 10-inch flange falls under ASME B16.5, which covers sizes up to NPS 24. The 42-inch flange is beyond that range, so it is made to ASME B16.47, which covers NPS 26 to NPS 60. The customer specified Series A, and that matters: Series A and Series B flanges have different outside diameters and bolt circles and cannot be swapped. We confirmed the series against the customer's drawings before forging started.

Inspection before shipment

Before packing, our QC team checked every flange against the drawings and the dimensional tolerances of B16.5 and B16.47. Outside diameter, hub dimensions and bore were measured and recorded. Marking was checked piece by piece: standard, size, class, bore schedule or wall thickness, material grade and heat number are all stamped on the flange rim, so each piece can be traced back to its material certificate.

Large-diameter flanges in high-yield material are not something every forge shop does well, and the 42-inch pieces took the most time on this order. We are glad to see them on their way to the customer.

If you are sourcing high-yield flanges in A859, A694 or other grades, in B16.5 or B16.47 sizes, contact C&N with your drawing or material list and we will reply with a quotation. You can also check our flange dimension and weight data for quick reference.
